I began my dental career as a Dental Nurse in the WRNS and went on to study Dental Therapy at New Cross, London. Since then I have worked clinically as a Dental Therapist in the Community Dental Service in Northamptonshire. I have also worked clinically for Milton Keynes PCT, two General Dental Practices and in the Paediatric Department at the Eastman Dental Hospital.
Over the years I have trained as an NVQ Assessor and Internal Verifier and eventually went on to gain the Post Graduate Certificate in Education.
My career in teaching and training began when the School for Dental Hygiene at the Eastman Dental Hospital began training Dental Therapists in 1998.
NLP, Hypnosis and other interests
My interest in hypnotherapy and NLP led me to further my studies. I was the first Dental Care Professional to achieve the Post Graduate Diploma in Hypnosis Applied to Dentistry, from University College London. A course previously only open to Dentists, Doctors and Psychotherapists. From a basic understanding and interest in NLP, I studied to Master Practitioner level with (INLPTA) the international training and awarding body. In 2009 I became an NLP trainer and achieved an ambition of meeting and training with Wyatt Woodsmall and Richard Bandler.
Other qualifications aquired along the way have been a Diploma in Performance Coaching, Thought Field Therapy Practitioner and a certificate in Transactional Analysis.
Recently I have began a course in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy and Dental Acupuncture
Training and Speaking
I have been fortunate to have travelled to many parts of England and Northern Ireland delivering training and speaking to many dentists, dental hygienists, dental therapists and dental nurses.
I have been involved in teaching on the Foundation Degree for Dental Nurses at Barnfield College and am currently involved in delivering the advanced communication module on the BSc Primary Dental Care for Kent University. This has enabled me to incorporate NLP into dentistry and I have been very pleased with how well it has been received.
I have recently delivered training for Dental Nurses in Topical Fluoride Application for Northants PCT, Leicester City PCT, and the London Deanery.
Current clinical commitment
I currently work in a mixed NHS/private dental practice 2 days per week. I was sadly recently made redundant from my 3 days in SPCDS where I used hypnosis and Relative Analgesia extensively for treating dental and needle phobia. The reason being that Dental Therapists could not work with very medically compromised patients, and 'normal' phobics were not in the remit of the Salaried Services. I also taught on the Dental Hygiene and Dental Therapy courses at the Eastman Dental Hospital for 16 years.
I continue to enjoy writing articles for Vital and Dental Nursing Magasines and enjoy my speaking and training commitments.
