Dental Acupuncture

This weekend I attended the British Dental Acupuncture introductory course. I see this as another string to my bow, and another tool in the box for treating anxioius patients.  As all anxious and phobic patients are different so the approach we need to take to treating them should be different and individual.
There have been many papers relating to the use of acupuncture in the dental journals over the years and it's main value appears to be in the management of patients with a severe gag reflex.

Happy New Year to all!!
Now the festivities are over and it is 'back to work' it is time to think about up and coming courses.
Firstly there is the LA refresher course for Dental Hygienists and Dental Therapists in London on the 8th February and in Manchester on the 15th February.  These courses are in conjunction with Aspiradent and need to be booked through their website
The day will cover:-
Local anaesthetic agents including articaine and mepivicaine

Dental Nurses courses Update and the BDTA Showcase

Well the latest Fluoride Varnish course for Dental Nurses is underway.  It was lovely to mee the new candidates last Saturday and I'm really looking forward to working with them.
Planning the next Plaque Indices course at the moment - just putting some dates together.  This will probably be held in Corby, Northants but I will confirm dates soon so keep an eye out for notification, if you are interested.
This weekend I'll be busy networking at the BDTA showcase being held at Birmingham NEC.  Looking forward to catching up with some interesting people and hopefully meeting some new ones.  You might catch me hovering around either the BADT or the Ivoclar Vivadent stand.

Local Anaesthetic Refresher

Saturday 7th September - Local Anaesthetic refresher held in Leeds.
Mr first association with Melanie Joyce at Aspira:dent.
Thoroughly enjoyed this day, we looked at all the anaesthetic agents in depth and how to calculate toxic doses of each for adults and children.  We looked at medical histories and drug interactions in order to clarify which LA to use and which not to use.
We also looked at needle phobia - the causes and theories behind this debilitating problem.  The delegates were introduced to various techniques for delivering painless injections and had the opportunity to look at landmarks in each others mouths for delivering ID Blocks.

Courses Update

Dates have now been released for the Local Anaesthetic Update and Rubber Dam Isolation courses.  Both are being held in Leeds and are for Dental Therapists and Dental Hygienists. You can register your interest on the Aspira:Dent website or on their facebook page.  Or for more details of the content please contact me on  Watch out for dates in London!!

On New Years Resolutions

Hoping everyone out there had a good Christmas and New Year.  It's back to work now and time to think about courses for 2013.  In fact it is that time of year when many of us attempt to make our 'New Year Resolutions'.  Perhaps before attempting that it is a good idea to reflect on 2012 first.  What went well, what didn't go so well and what would you change if you could.
Ive been reflecting on Communication- with patients and other people generally.
I came across this 'One in Five Rule' in a book by Dr Steve Peters who, as it happens is the resident psychiatrist with the British Cycling and Sky Procycling teams.
